Frequently Asked Questions
Questions you might have
The things we'd want to know too.
Is Our Well only for breast cancer patients?
Yes, for now. We're starting with breast cancer because that's where our research, design, and Shelby's content are focused. We expect to expand to other cancers in the future.
What does Our Well cost?
Our Well is free to use during the beta period. We will introduce a paid subscription later this year, and we'll let you know in advance — you'll have a chance to decide whether to continue.
Can my caregiver use Our Well with me?
A dedicated caregiver experience is rolling out soon. When it launches, your primary caregiver will be able to create their own account and share access to your tasks, village page, and Plan Well, while each of you keeps private conversations with Shelby. In the meantime, you can invite caregivers to join your village like any other supporter.
Does Shelby give medical advice?
No. Shelby helps you understand your results and your options in a way personalized to your specific situation. She can explain your lab results in plain language, answer questions about your diagnosis using trusted medical sources, and help you make sense of what's ahead — but she will never diagnose you, recommend a treatment, or replace your care team. For medical decisions, please talk to your doctor.
Where does Shelby's information come from?
Shelby's responses are grounded in trusted medical sources — including Breastcancer.org, Mayo Clinic, and the American Cancer Society. For practical, lived-experience information personalized to your situation — things like product recommendations, coping strategies, and tips from other patients — she also draws from carefully curated community sources online. She always cites her sources, so you can see whether something is medical guidance or shared experience. If she doesn't know something, she'll tell you.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your information is encrypted at rest and in transit, and we keep your identifying details separate from your medical information at the database level. We work with a small number of carefully chosen service providers and have reviewed each one's data handling. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to train Shelby for other users.
Who can see my conversations with Shelby?
Only you. Your conversations with Shelby are private to your account — not visible to anyone else who uses Our Well, including your caregiver if you have one. We do not read your conversations.
Will my village see my private medical information?
No. Your village can see what you choose to share with them — your name, the parts of your journey you publish in updates, and the tasks you create. They cannot see your conversations with Shelby, your lab results, or any other medical details.
How does Our Well handle my pathology and lab reports?
When you upload a lab report or pathology document, Shelby extracts the key facts — values, biomarkers, staging details — so she can explain them to you. We then permanently delete the original document; we never retain the source file. Before storing the extracted information, we strip out personal identifiers — your name, date of birth, address, medical record number, and physician names.
What happens to my data if I leave?
You can request deletion of your account and all the data we hold on you at any time by emailing support@ourwell.life. We complete deletions within 30 days, and they're permanent — your data is removed from our primary database and from our service providers' systems.
